Facing is an additional piece of fabric used to aesthetically finish those garment edges which otherwise would remain raw (after sewing all the pieces together). When an edge that needs to be finished is a straight line, the facing can be cut as one with the main pattern piece. The facing usually sits on the wrong side of your garment, but can be also a decorative detail.

Common facing areas are necklines, armholes – in blouses and dresses without sleeves, and waistlines in skirts.
